The 'soap bubbles' that make up this pendant are actually Weaire-Phelan structures: Mathematically defined foam cells, optimized to occupy the least surface area between them. The best-known example of these structures in architecture is found in the cladding of the Beijing National Aquatics Center, built for the 2008 Olympics.
